Vaguely political. Probably NSFW.

As a rule, I try not to get too political in social media, and definitely not on this website.  But after I spent a year working on an interactive fiction (IF) game that explores Latin American issues, a well-known IF writer dismiss it as racist without even having read it.  So, I have decided, f*ck it.  I’ll state a few political opinions here that relate to “geek culture” and its obsessions with Political Correctness.  I can’t promise I’ll never do it again, but I’ll try.

So this is old news, but Dr. Who is now a woman.  Great for her.  I don’t actually care, and I stared watching Dr. Who when scarf-wearing Tom Baker was the Doctor.  What bothers the hell out of me is that they had to politicize gender at all.  All last season, Bill keep shoving it in people’s faces that she’s a lesbian.  The people she tells keep being cool with it, i.e., her sexuality is not a point of conflict and therefore not pertinent to the story, guys!  Maybe we should worry that you’ve become a Cyberman!  Then, to top it all off, Bill and the Doctor have this exchange:

BILL: So, the Time Lords, bit flexible on the whole man-woman thing, then, yeah?

DOCTOR: We’re the most civilized civilization in the universe. We’re billions of years beyond your petty human obsession with gender and its associated stereotypes.

Dude.  Science.  Freakin’ clownfish swap sexes.  Certain frogs swap sexes.  What the hell does biology have to do with “gender and its associated stereotypes”?  Congratulations.  You have just taken a great science fiction idea about a sentient alien species that changes sex, and turned Dr. Who into Cultural Marxist Propaganda.

Efforts to “de-objectify” female comic book characters.  This kind of thing has been going on for a long time, but it’s come up again because the Wonder Woman movie has been such a hit.  First of all, the “objectify” term itself comes from Freud, and if you’re looking at something, you’re objectifying it.  So if you really want to “de-objectify” female comic book characters, stop reading comics.

Also, exhibitionism is a part of sexuality.  Ask the peacock if he get’s more ass when he’s showing his feather or if he’s not.  When you go out on a date, do you try to look nice?

Anyway, making a lady more buff won’t make her any less sexy.

I had really wanted to blog about Rodrigo Fresan’s The Invented Part, which is a kooky and awesome Spanish-language Ulysses, as well as the Russian classic Roadside Picnic (basis for the movie Stalker) but SJW prejudice has been directed at my work.  And prejudice is the enemy.

Next week, I hope to get back to our irregularly scheduled programming.
